Waiora - Alex Moore Park

In 2019 WCC reinvigorated the campaign to replace the two existing clubroom buildings and establish a new sports hub at Alex Moore Park in Johnsonville.

The name Waiora was gifted by local iwi when it opened in March 2021.

Architecture HDT led the delivery of this new multi-purpose sports club facility for the Johnsonville community. With four local area sports clubs and Wellington Deaf Society as the principal building users, emphasis on flexible spaces, the playing field view and accessibility were prime drivers for the project.

Featuring a sizeable club space with a fully equipped bar and kitchen, meeting room, viewing deck and scorer’s room, the first floor offers expansive views to the north and east over the playing fields. A passenger lift inside and accessible stairs both inside and out allow unhindered access to all of the building and its amenities.

The ground level houses four new change rooms at the north end of the building that can be combined into two larger ones, as user requirements dictate, complemented by separate accessible WC and shower facilities and a dedicated Referee’s change room. Across the glazed entry link corridor at the south end is an array of individual storage spaces for the various clubs’ use.

A dark and naturally toned palette of robust materials were selected for the exterior, so not to impose on the surroundings and sit well against the protected mature pohutukawa trees on the street boundary. Internally, a neutral colour selection accentuates featured elements emboldened by dark painted finishes, which provides a backdrop for the clubs’ to inhabit.

We are delighted to bring this facility to life and know it will serve the community for many years.
